student answers

Important Note: You should not read these answers before attempting to answer on your own.

These are answers sent in by you and your fellow students. We encourage a free and open discussion, in which you and your fellow students can comment on each others’ answers and help each other out. To answer questions, contact Milo.

Nobody is required to send in their answers. This is entirely self-paced. But those who do send in their answers may be able to get feedback from other students around the world.

Some questions will ask about your own personal beliefs. There is no “right” or “wrong” answer to belief questions. Whether you share the answer with others or keep it to yourself, the goal is to find your own personal answer, an answer that individually fits the unique you.

Some questions will require searching elsewhere (other than Scott Cunningham’s “Wicca A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner”). The same copyright and plagarism rules that apply in other class work applies here.

You may paraphrase (put into your own words) from books, magazine articles, web sites, etc., but must provide the source (book title and author, web site URL, etc.).

You may make short quotations, using the exact wording of a phrase, sentence, paragraph, or verse of a larger work, but must provide the source (book title and author, web site URL, etc.).

If you find information in at least two unrelated sources, you may consider it “common knowledge” and freely put it into your own words. It is polite, but not required, to provide the best quality source for common knowledge.

You may freely use direct quotations of ancient materials (or anything more than a couple of centuries old). It is polite, but not required, to provide the best quality source for ancient materials. Remember that modern translations of ancient materials may still be in copyright, in which case the quotations must be short and attributed.

Important Note: You should not read these answers before attempting to answer on your own.

Important Note: Not all of these answers will be correct. In some cases, every individual will have their own personal answer. In some cases, the individual offering an answer made mistakes or had an incomplete answer. Other student’s answers are provided to offer an opportunity for further discussion, and the inclusion of an answer from another student is not an indication that the answer is correct or complete.

When you shift from the state of the physical world into a realm with energies. —CrystalAngel2006

3. What is the Wiccan view of the divine?

Only believing/worshiping/honoring etc. the earth and everything on it and around it. Wicca chants to the Gods and Goddess for help, light, love, etc. —CrystalAngel2006

4. What is reincarnation?

Teen Witch notes: It might help to know the meaning of “reincarnation” as defined by Hinduism and Buddhism.

In Hinduism, a soul will reincarnate through many lifetimes. The soul stays intact from lifetime to lifetime. Souls can pass through many forms, from plants and insects all the way up to humans. Karma, built up or burned off in previous lives, determines the next incarnation. The goal is to get rid of all karma by becoming enlightened and achieving Moksha, or union with the one soul of the entire universe.

In Buddhism, a soul will reincarnate through many lifetimes. Each incarnation is made up of “pieces” of many souls, with “soul fragments” from many individuals being combined to make the soul for each newborn. The goal is to achieve Nirvana, or nothingness.

Being born again as something else like a fox or a rabbit. —CrystalAngel2006

5. What is Wiccan morality?

A rule that states “Do what you want, as long as you harm none”. I think that if you obey this rule you can do better and not be tempted away from being a “Good” witch. —CrystalAngel2006

6. What is magic?

The moving of natural energies to help or make better of something. —CrystalAngel2006

7. How does nature relate to Wicca?

There are Gods and Goddess for different things that are to be worshiped, like earth and the things on it. Wicca uses herbs that are from the earth, natural things that are grown from the planet. —CrystalAngel2006

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Llewellyn’s Practical Magick Series) ; by Scott Cunningham; Llewellyn Publications; Nov 1990; ISBN 0875421180; paperback; 218 pages; $7.96; review: Scott Cunningham simplifies and combines many witchcraft traditions, which doesn’t make purists of any particular tradition happy, but makes things much easier to understand for beginners. This book is a great one for beginners to start out with.
