A 2007 study showed that lowering insulin levels reduces acne. The researchers split 43 men ages 15 to 25 between two groups for 12-weeks, one group eating a high glycemic load (typical Western diet) and the other eating a lower glycemic diet emphasizing whole grains, fruits, and fish. The low glycemic-load diet led to a significant reduction in the number of acne vulgaris lesions. “The experimental diet also reduced weight, reduced the free androgen index, and increased insulin-like growth factor binding protein when compared with a high glycemic-load diet.” The study, conducted by Robyn N. Smith and Neil J. Mann of the School of Applied Sciences, RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia), Anna Braue of the Department of Dermatotly, Royal Melbourne Hospital (Australia), Henna Mäkeläinen of the Department of Dermatology, Royal Children’s Hospital (Australia), and George A. Varigos of the Department of Biochemistry and Food Chemistry, Turku University (Finland), was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Volume 57, Issue 2, August 2007, pages 247-256.

Organic Labels: The Bush administration’s USDA has announced that they will help large American food corporations increase their profits by purposely deceiving the American public by putting non-organic foods into foods labelled as being organic. Under U.S. law, for foods to labelled as organic, crops must be grown without chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, bioengineering, or pesticides and animals must be raised without antibiotics and growth hormones and given access to the outdoors. The USDA has decided that 43 non-organic ingredeients can be added to foods labelled as organic. To protest this decision, go to Organic Consumers Association. One of the non-organic ingredients is fish oil. The non-organic fish oils can contain toxins such as PCBs and mercury.
